Latest Update (9/6/99) follows:

Came home late last night from our first reunion and I am excited about our start. We had 27 show up and with wives and dates a total of 50. I will get some news to Bill Lynch on this in a few days after I rest from the trip. I will scan some pictures in a few days Dennis. We all got together Friday night with cameras so there will be many. Everyone is excited about Reno next year Ray and will be working to locate more crew. We did our tours to Graceland and to see the ducks at the peabody on an individual basis since there was enough cars and everyone appeared to be happy with just meeting old shipmates. Had a great dinner together Satruday night. On Saturday morning we had an informal meeting to see how we could help our group grow. Many BZ's to you on the web page Dennis and to you Ray on starting a reunion group. We thought we should start a USS Towers Reunion Association to work until Reno and then elect new officers. I will act as President, RD1 Jerry Skrobacki as VP and ETCS Jack Metcalf as Sec/Treas.

-------------end of latest update---------------

We are in the final days prior to the first Towers reunion. The Magnolia Room at the Grand Veranda Hotel has been set aside for the crew to meet for bull sessions and to renew old friendships. The room will be open from 1600-2400 on the 26th and from 0800-2400 on the 27th and 28th. Tours will leave for Memphis Graceland, Beale Street and Sun Studios at 0900 on both Friday and Saturday.

A night tour of Beale Street is also available with all tours provided by the Tunica Trolley and individuals are responsible for cost. Information on the tours can be found at www.tunicatrolley.com/ .

Reservations for dinner have been made for LB's steak house at 1730 on Saturday for the Towers group on a voluntary and pay as you go basis. This is a first class restaurant with menu prices from $16.00 to $35.00.

There will be a meeting of shipmates at 0800 on Saturday in the magnolia room to discuss how we should organize for the future. A limited number of Towers ball caps will be available for purchase in the magnolia room. I'm still working on some fun things to do but hope everyone will understand this is our first reunion and I know we will grow and learn. At last count it appears about 40 former crew members will attend. Hope to see you in Tunica.

U.S.S. Towers  DDG-9
Reunion 1999
Grand Casino Resort
Tunica/Memphis

Shipmates,

From August 26 through August 28, 1999 former crew members of a great ship will gather together at the Grand Casino resort in Tunica, Mississippi, just south of Memphis, Tennessee, to renew old friendships, possibly tell a few sea stories, and bask in rememberance of day's past.

To my knowledge, this will be the first reunion for Towers.  We will depart from procedures established by other reunions and avoid advanced payment requests and a regimented scheduling of events that are many times boring and most times confusing.  We will place our concentration on a Liberty call with old shipmates.

Hotel/Reservations

I have signed a contract to reserve a block of rooms at the Grand Casino Veranda Hotel.  The room rate will be $59.00 a night, single or double, with advanced reservations required.  The hotel has requested that we make our reservations no later than June 27, 1999 to guarantee the $59.00 rate.  Those planning to attend are requested to make reservations by calling the Hotel at 1-800-39GRAND and indicating that you will be with the Towers Reunion Group.  It will be of great advantage to our Shipmates if you will do this early in the event we need to expand the number of blocked rooms.

Location/Transportation

Flying into Memphis International Airport, you will find the normal facilities of a major airport.  The Tunica Trolley provides shuttle service from Memphis International to The Grand Casino Resort.

Entertainment

Memphis has many site-seeing attractions.  These include Beale Street, home of Memphis "blues" music; Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, and many other offerings normally found in a major metropolitan city.  I'm sure all of you recall our museum visits on port calls in places such as Olongopo, in the Phillipines.  Yes, Memphis also has a musuem.  There are nine casinos in the Tunica area that offer Las Vegas style entertainment.

Liberty Call

A 72 hour Liberty will be granted to all who attend.  The Liberty boat will depart from the Towers meeting room at the hotel.  We will attempt to convert the meeting room to a combined mess deck, CPO mess, and Wardroom for the purpose of making this our focal point for activities.

All attendees are requested to bring any memorabilia you may have from the Towers.  This includes Cruise books, pictures, etc. so we all may share the memories.

SHIPMATES

From the Plank Owners to the De-commissioning Crew, there will be many memories to share with Crew members who served during the Viet-Nam years to the years homeported in Japan.  That twenty-year-old Towers Plank Owner is now approaching sixty and I would like to see him.  I'm sure you all feel the same.

I ask everyone to lend a hand trying to locate as many Shipmates as possible to inform them of our Reunion.  Let's make this a memorable event!

Sincerely,

Bob Brandon '64-'68

Additional Information:

Rooms will be $75.00 (Bob writes that he was able to get the Grand Casino to lower the price to $59.00!) a night and a reception room is being provided. Activities are being left open at this time but a tour of graceland/beale street is being considered depending on the number that would be interested in this.

Information on Tunica can be found at www.tunicamiss.org. Individuals who will attend are requested to contact me at 931-232-4057 or Bob Brandon, 203 Church Street, Dover, TN 37058 or brandon@compu.net.

Person's wishing to attend are requested to make their reservations direct at the grand phone 800-946-4946. It will help if attendees inform me of intentions to attend so I can keep up with the number of rooms reserved. I have started with a block of thirty five rooms but this can be increased. Hope we can get a good turn out.

Thanks Bob Brandon
